Fan Choice Awards: sports fans to have their say
We Are The Fan (WTF) in partnership with National Football Supporters’ Association (NAFSA) launch the Fan Choice Awards. The project will run from today, 21st August until the beginning of October 2020. The FCA gives fans a tool with which to show their appreciation of the hard work done by athletes, teams, coaches, administrators and fans in the previous year of sport. A fan will be able to nominate and vote for the candidate of their choice across 9 categories in football, rugby and cricket.
“Both NAFSA and WTF are driven by fans, and we share a common goal to amplify the role of local sports fans to ensure that we no longer remain, passive stakeholders,” said Lichaba Nthethe, CEO of WTF, “the FCA is an all-digital project, which allows fans to get involved on their devices and from the comfort of their homes. This also ensures that we can keep fans safe from Covid19.”
Sports fans will be able to visit www.fanchoiceawards.co.za, where they can register, and nominate their favourite candidate during the first phase, and then cast their votes once the nominees have been finalized.
Categories featured include Fan of the Year, Supporters’ Branch of the Year, Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, National Team of the Year, Administrator of the Year and the Rewind Award, a special award that celebrates sporting legends in retrospect.
“NAFSA is pleased to partner with WTF on such an important initiative to give fans a voice in voting for their favourite sports personalities both in the field of play and on the administration front. NAFSA is a home for all football fans from all walks of life and acts as a united voice for our members. We believe in partnerships with key players in the football space and other sporting codes as a way to
work together in transforming the lives of supporters for the better” said Acting NAFSA CEO, Siya Loyilane.
Nominations for the FCA begin this afternoon from 15:00 on its website and will continue until 18 September when the PSL is wrapped up. Nominees will be announced the following day on the 19th with voting commencing two days later 21st September.
The Fan Choice Awards voting and winners announcement has chosen a unique format which works for the new normal on the digital space. Instead of the usual long period of voting and one event for announcements, the FCA will allow for three days of voting for two specific categories and then announce the winners at the end of the third day. The voting and winner announcement phase will
start again the following day with two new categories and continue for the next three days and
lasting for two weeks.
